How it works

Eleven picks.
One number.

A round takes about two minutes. The maths is the game: every pick moves the total, and you cannot see the goals until they are on the pitch.

Roll the reel

The reel lands on three players from any English top-flight season since 1992/93, legends and current stars alike, filtered to the slots you still have open.

Pick a player

You know the name, the club and the position. Their career goals are the trivia: know them, or take a guess.

Fill the 4-4-2

Tap one and they go straight into an open slot they can play. Then roll again. Strikers score, but a keeper with a goal to their name can be the difference.

Land on 442

When the XI is full the scoreboard reads the total. Nearer is better, exactly 442 is the bullseye. Then climb the global table.

Every roll draws from players who fit an open slot: legends from 1992/93, this season's stars, and everyone in between. A club-mate of your last pick can turn up to tempt you, and from the second roll on, about one reel in five swaps a player for a wildcard.

200Achievements20 points each, up to 200. Earned for the shape of your XI: club spines, national blocs, ton-up scorers, era spans, a perfect-fit XI. Ties go to the exact hit, then fewer rolls, then who got there first.

What is 442 Goals Game?

A free football trivia game. A reel lands on three players drawn from every English top-flight season since 1992/93, legends and current stars alike. You pick one, drop them into a 4-4-2, and repeat until all eleven slots are full. Every player carries their real career goals in England's top division, and the aim is to land the XI's combined total on exactly 442.

Is it free?

Yes. It is free to play in the browser at play.442goals.com, and the iPhone app will be free too. There are no ads and nothing to buy.

Do I need an account?

No. Just play: you show as Anonymous until you add a leaderboard name in Settings. There is no email, password or sign-in, and you can wipe your name and scores from inside the game whenever you like.

Which players are in the game?

Around 1,200 players from every English top-flight season since 1992/93, from retired legends to this season's stars. Each player carries their real career goals in England's top division, compiled from publicly available sources and updated as seasons are played.

What happens if I overshoot 442?

Nothing dramatic. Accuracy points fall by two for every goal you finish away from 442, above or below it. Exactly 442 earns the full 500 accuracy points and an achievement of its own. Land 250 goals away and accuracy is zero, but squad quality and achievements still count.

How do the leaderboards work?

Every game counts on two tables in the game: Today, which resets at midnight UTC, and All-time. Play as often as you like and only your best score stays on each. Every score is replayed and checked on our side before it counts, and an exact 442 carries the bullseye.

Which platforms is it on?
